Abstract

This book is about transgenic animals - animals into which new genes have been artificially introduced. It has chapters by leading authorities on the present state of play regarding the application of the transgenic technology to different animal groups. A great range of animal types, ranging from protozoan cells, through nematode worms and fruit flies to many higher vertebrates, have been used in this experimental way and this book provides an in-depth, up-to-date, comprehensive and authoritative account of the work with all such animal types. The likely impact of transgenic animals on the future development of agriculture and medicine is very great; at the same time they provide an unrivalled experimental system for the study of gene regulation, genetic aspects of disease, and gene therapy. One of the objectives of the book is therefore to set transgenic animals in the context of their present and future contributions to medicine and agriculture.

Abstract

Insect transgenesis promises improvements in agriculture, pharmaceuticals and public health. Many important insects can now be routinely transformed with effectors that have useful applications. Agriculture presents the largest market for transgenic insects and has a foundational history of success with sterile insect technique for control of pests including Mediterranean fruit flies and screwworms. Biotechnology will contribute superior markers, suppressible sterility and sex-conversion. Public health is also seeing transgenic mosquitoes developed which suppress natural populations and are in

Abstract

In his 2006 State of the Union speech, President George W. Bush asked the U.S. Congress to prohibit the ""most egregious abuses of medical research,"" such as the ""creation of animal-human hybrids."" The president's message echoed that of a 2004 report by the President's Council on Bioethics, which recommended that hybrid human-animal embryos be banned by Congress.Discussions of early interspecies research, in which cells or DNA are interchanged between humans and nonhumans at early stages of development, can often devolve into sweeping statements, colorful imagery, and confusing policy. Abstract

Gene Expression Systems: Using Nature for the Art of Expression offers detailed information on a wide variety of gene expression systems from an array of organisms. It describes several different types of expression systems including transient, stable, viral, and transgenic systems. Each chapter is written by a leader in the field. The book includes timelines and examples for each expression system, and provides an overview of the future of recombinant protein expression.Key Features* Provides detailed information on expression systems* Covers a variety of promoters and
